Climate change: Why children are being taught to fail in schools

According to experts, children who are exposed to climate change issues early can help them prepare for their future.

Shamayel Zaidi is an Indian schoolteacher who assigns the same assignment to each of his students: a presentation about one of three topics: consumer awareness, environmental sustainability, or social issues.

He said that environment is something almost no one chooses. Since the dangers of climate change are more evident than ever, temperatures have risen faster than ever. Glaciers are melting faster and violent cyclones as well as wildfires have increased. This has put children at risk.

However, in Varanasi’s residential school, Mr Zaidi stated that students don’t care because they haven’t been informed about the severeness of climate change.

He said, “Unless your community is being affected by floods or other disasters,”

He said inequality plays a part too. Some of my students are interested in talking about climate change. Many of my students come from homes where these subjects are not discussed in their families.
